Bale’s character, I am assuming that the dark hat was their way of separating him from the rest. Based on my knowledge hat color was troop specific not officer vs enlisted

Calvary Hats from the movie Hostiles
I mentioned in my review of the movie Hostiles that I thought the hats were done well. Some might say they are a little too IJ, but when compared to actual campaign covers of the era, the similarities to a fedora are more than that of a cowboy hat.

Dieselpunk will continue to be a theme. It is used in games and movies even when it is not realized. When I think of movies like The Rocketeer and Sky Captain, I believe the reason they were not successful was simple timing.
