Calvary Hats from the movie Hostiles
I mentioned in my review of the movie Hostiles that I thought the hats were done well. Some might say they are a little too IJ, but when compared to actual campaign covers of the era, the similarities to a fedora are more than that of a cowboy hat.

Bale’s character, I am assuming that the dark hat was their way of separating him from the rest. Based on my knowledge hat color was troop specific not officer vs enlisted

There is something distinctly American about CAV lids.
I like these examples from the Spanish American War.

I have a mental "hall of fame of movie hats" and this one quickly shot up into the top five. That is one very cool hat, and historically very close to some of the Civil War hats I see in my history books. I love the size and shape of it.The Oracle wrote: ↑Mon Aug 20, 2018 5:15 pmBale’s character, I am assuming that the dark hat was their way of separating him from the rest. I don't know how I did this, but here it is. General George Meade of the Union army. His hat is much like Bale's hat in Hostiles.

I've been looking into military headgear from this point in history and have found two terms. Hardee hat and Burnside campaign hat.
Above is a sample of a Hardee hat from a Civil War museum. To my untrained eye it looks exactly like the Burnside campaign hat. I suspect that GEN Burnside's name may have been attached to a modified Hardee hat. See below.
