The Demise of Facebook means the return Of The Electric Speakeasy

Post by Eric Renderking Fisk » Tue Aug 14, 2018 9:54 pm

I don't know about you... but this was one of the most terrifying images I've seen since 9/11/2001.

Image

This meant one of two things - Either this is Congresses first step in taking over Facebook, or this is Facebook's step towards taking over Congress.

Either way, it's bad news for people who use Facebook to practice free speech. Most would believe that Mr. Zukerberg was being called on the carpet for the mishandling of using his service, selling access users information to companies like " Cambridge Analytica" and may have paved the way for rogue elements to hijack this election...

... but what I saw was that our little boy Pinnochio was proving to what a lot of us already suspected - that these grumpy old men and women that we keep sending to Washington D.C. to protect our interests are so ignorant and obtuse. And they mask that ignorance with arrogance.

It's so clear that the men and women who were "grilling" him that they had no idea what he actually does but they are clearly intimidated by him. He was obviously in control of that room, not the Chairperson who was running that hearing.

And it's inevitable that Mr. Zukerberg is in the process of controlling the way we consume news, what we think of the events around us, and the inevitable act of rewriting history to create a narrative that suits their needs, not ours.

And I've been seeing more and more news stories about how peoples accounts are being deleted because they violated community guidelines. Facebook groups and pages are getting shut down, YouTube accounts are getting deleted with all the content.... many people are finding their social media accounts erased.

No most of these people have their stuff deleted for obvious reasons, for posting spam, porn, racist content. OK, understood.

But what about the people who have their content for reasons they don't understand? What about the few people who had material that is similar to what I have on The Metaphysical Connection and The Fedora Chronicles? There are people who have websites that debate conspiracy theories that have been cleared out. There are people who have anti-Hillary and anti-Trump sites taken down or pages and groups that throw their support for Third Candidates? If they haven't been targeted, will they be next?

Now people are looking for new platforms, alternatives to Facebook. There are a lot of people who see what's happening and how it's going to be getting worse. They are going to start censoring the crap out of social media, and/or social media is going to start demanding that you submit to their GroupThink.

Here's what I see happening, Facebook is going to go the way of "MySpace." People are already leaving in droves. People are leaving Facebook and might not have anywhere to go...

Well, to all of you. Welcome back and welcome home.

Here's a link to a podcast that made me rethink Facebook...

Facebook does have a certain utility, I'll allow that. Moreso when it was new than lately.

But...

The longer I've been on, the more I've come to resent anything that uses an algorithm to pick the things I see. Used to be when you logged in you got the whole network of your friends and what they were doing. Lately, you log in and see what a machine thinks you ought.

Lots of clutter. Lots of crap. Most of it irrelevant, third-hand content-producer vomit by the time it filters down to you.

And then you got TFC...the once and future neighborhood bar. I think I'm gonna go find a table and start carving my initials.

I have something of a procedural question for the powers that be. I am very excited to have the world's greatest never ending, 24/7 cocktail party back in the form of the Fedora Chronicles Chapter 2, however I have some friends who will probably not join us here. I will have some ideas that I would like to share with them as well as the members here in the form of admittedly boring and long winded posts. My question is, will there be any administrative heartburn if I post something here that I've posted on Facebook?

Not at all, go for it.

One of the things I'm not going to do is entertain whiners and complainers. One of the biggest mistakes I made in the past allowed people to PM me and complain about things that were happening here and demanded that I do something about it...

... Meaning that he or she wanted me to intervene because they were losing an argument and they were feeling bad about it. Somehow they were being insulted or embarrassed and they wanted me to step in and do what?

Fight his or her battles for him or her? Argue their case for them?

I can't tell you how many times I was told that I needed to censor some of my most loyal members of this forum the first time around. I can't tell you how many times people from other forums DEMANDED that I do things in secret via PM's that would be considered immoral and inappropriate is public because they "believe in free speech" and want to get their side of the story told.

If you have a problem with not getting your story told, whose fault is that?

Go ahead - post what you want. I've turned off the PM feature so if anyone has a problem with what you've said they'll have to tell me out in the open like every one else.

Ok, not the real point you were making, but I love this.

Yes, time to put your big boy pants on. I never understood why some people even want to debate, then get mad because they were not winning, but I am glad to be back with some of the most interesting and intelligent people I have had the fortune of interacting with.

I agree with Oracle. Debate is a good and healthy thing as it makes both sides question their positions while defending them. I think that as long as the debate is civil in that positions and not people are attacked it should be allowed.

Hey, try this on for size... what if I'm wrong about a couple of things? Maybe I don't have the full picture on a controversial topic?

Maybe I'm wrong? Or what if I just need to hear how the other side is prosecuting their case so I can know what they're bringing to the table?

Why would I want to shut them up?
