Yes indeed, Pilot. I also didn't want it to appear that no one was reading this thread. :)

Many thanks, my friend! History is indeed a subject that is slow to garner an audience. As our membership grows I suspect more people will drop by. Probably by accident but it still counts. :D

Ha! I'm glad you enjoyed that little slice of history. :D

There is a certain historical parallel in this ban to today's anti gun movement. While the stated goal of the ban in the 12TH Century was to end war that wasn't the real goal. Like much of weapons control efforts it was far more about control and much less about safety. The crossbow of the period was fairly simple to maintain and most peasants who made up the lance fodder of many medieval armies could be trained to use the weapon effectively in a relatively short length of time. The crossbow leveled the fighting field to the point that a conscripted peasant could bring down a noble knight with a well placed shot. In the heat of battle the kings of Europe loved the crossbow and its ability to destroy the very expensive weapon system of the mounted knight. After the battle however these same kings, many of whom could be accurately described as tyrants, realized that if a peasant could bring down the other guy's knights he could bring down my knights. Since knights served as the ankle breakers of the nobility in matters of taxes, confiscation of land or crops, and forced labor the crossbow was deemed a threat. Hence the attempted ban. Tyrants will always fear armed peasants.
