54 AD - Nero succeeds Claudius as Roman Emperor.

1307 - French King Philip IV has Grand Master Jacques de Molay and Knights Templar arrested and charged of idolatry and corruption. If I were a suspicious historian I would suggest that this had more to do with Philip IV being bankrupt and the Templars being very rich than any real corruption of idolatry. If I were suspicious. 8-)

The story of the Templar Knights has always fascinated me. I know many Masonic Rites claim inheritance from the Templars but if I were someone with the time and resources I would want to really dig into the many myths and legends surrounding Order. What I think likely is that the were survivors that went on to many of the different places, certainly some probably ended up with the Masons but I wonder what other influences they'd had.

This is an area of interest for me as well. The problem is that there is very little primary source information readily available to the public and what exists in that vacuum of facts are the work of conspiracy theorists. Nothing against the theorists, their work does make for interesting reading. Unfortunately like a lot of theoretical works it only includes facts that agree with the theory and carefully eliminates any that do not so much is lost to the public. Even hardcore researchers fail to give an accurate picture of the fate of the Templars since they tend to concentrate on Templar treasure, or Templar rites, or Templar artifacts. If I had the time I would concentrate my research on the Templar membership itself. Many of the Templars were not only superbly trained fighting men but were well educated as well. That combination is a valuable commodity in the early 14TH Century and they were bound to make their mark in history and those marks would in turn make very good historical breadcrumbs.

1066 - The Battle of Hastings occurred in England. The Norman forces of William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II of England. Earlier I talked about Harold Godwinson's mistakes in fighting the Battle of Hastings which lead to his defeat. Harold and his assembled forces consisting of the Fyrd or partially trained militia and Harold's own Housecarls or small professional army considered to be mainly the king's bodyguard, won the battle of Stanford bridge on 25 SEP. Three days later the Norman's landed in England and Harold raced South to meet them with his now battle depleted force. Harold failed to consider several things; the effect of travel on his depleted force, the fact that many of the Fyrd had started to return home and could not be quickly reached to rejoin Harold; everything the Norman's had was "On the beach" in other words no supply lines to Normandy, no reserve, no support. Most historians agree that if Harold had taken his time to reinforce the Fyrd and rested his troops while traveling sensibly for the time he had a good chance of defeating the Normans.

William Schrenk was captured at the scene of the shooting. The bullet hit the President at a location in front of an inside coat pocket and had the good taste to travel through a folded copy of his speech and his metal glasses case before striking the President's chest. The round was mostly spent.

1933 - Nazi Germany announced that it was withdrawing from the League of Nations.

1947 - Over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California, pilot Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 rocket plane and became the first person to break the sound barrier. Chuck Yeager did this while concealing the fact that he had broken several ribs in a riding accident the night before. They don't make them much like that anymore.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis began. It was on this day that U.S. intelligence personnel analyzing data discovered Soviet medium-range missile sites in Cuba. On October 22 U.S. President John F. Kennedy announced that he had ordered the naval "quarantine" of Cuba.

1986 - Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev charged that the U.S. wanted to "bleed the Soviet Union economically" with the arms race in space. He wasn't wrong, in fact President Reagan knew that much of the "Star Wars" would not work as advertised but continued with the program in view of the fact that the Soviets were trying to match us in spending and advancement (Silly Communists), and that the work on "Star Wars" was making leaps in technology that had many other practical uses. In other words Gorbachev was playing chess and President Reagan was playing poker. 8-)
