1588 - The English defeated the Spanish Armada in the Battle of Gravelines. Inspired tactics, the use of fire ships and bad weather along with the lack of uniformity of Spanish naval artillery aided the English victory.
1609 - Samuel de Champlain shoots and kills two Iroquois chiefs at Ticonderoga, New York setting the stage for French-Iroquois conflicts for the next 150 years.
1773 - The first schoolhouse to be located west of the Allegheny Mountains was built in Schoenbrunn, OH.
1786 - "The Pittsburgh Gazette" became the first newspaper west of the Alleghenies to be published. The paper's name was later changed to "The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette." The "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" or "PG" is still being published today.
1848 - During the Irish Potato Famine the Tipperary Revolt occurred. This nationalist revolt against British rule put down by police and was unsuccessful.
1905 - US Secretary of State William Howard Taft makes secret agreement with Japanese Prime Minister Katsura agreeing to Japanese free rein in Korea in return for non-interference with the US in the Philippines.
1914 - The first transcontinental telephone service was inaugurated when two people held a conversation between New York, NY and San Francisco, CA.
1957 - The International Atomic Energy Agency was established.
1958 - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was authorized by the U.S. Congress.
1975 - OAS (Organization of American States) members voted to lift collective sanctions against Cuba. The U.S. government welcomed the action and announced its intention to open serious discussions with Cuba on normalization.
1993 - The Israeli Supreme Court acquitted retired Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk of being Nazi death camp guard "Ivan the Terrible." His death sentence was thrown out and he was set free.

1832 - Battle of Bad Axe, Wisconsin: 1,300 Illinois militia defeat Sauk and Fox Native Americans ending the Black Hawk War.
1858 - In Boston and New York City the first mailboxes were installed along streets.
1858 - Government of India transferred from East India Company to the British Crown.
1861 - The United States Congress passed the first income tax. The revenues were intended for the war effort against the South. The tax was never enacted.

1596 - David Fabricius discovers light variation of Mira, first recorded variable star.
1777 - During the Siege of Fort Stanwix the first U.S. flag was officially flown during battle. This was the "Betsy Ross" flag authorized by Congress on 14 June of that year. This replaced the Grand Union flag which consisted of thirteen alternating red and white stripes with a Union Jack in the upper/inner corner. The idea behind the stars of the "Betsy Ross" flag was to represent a new constellation.
1914 - Germany declared war on France. The next day World War I began when Britain declared war on Germany.
1923 - Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th president of the U.S. after the sudden death of President Harding.
1934 - Adolf Hitler merges the offices of German Chancellor and President, declaring himself "Führer". I'm surprised that he didn't want to be the morale officer too.
1936 - The U.S. State Department advised Americans to leave Spain due to the Spanish Civil War.
1936 - Jesse Owens won the first of his four Olympic gold medals.
1943 - GEN George S. Patton chewed out and slapped a private. Later, GEN Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered him to apologize for the incident.
1956 - Bedloe's Island had its name changed to Liberty Island.
1958 - The Nautilus became the first vessel to cross the North Pole underwater. The mission was known as "Operation Sunshine."
