1863 - U.S. President Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address as he dedicated a national cemetery at the site of the Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania. Be warned, when taking a History test writing even in jest that Lincoln's Gettysburg address was 1616 Canal Street will probably result in failure and a trip to the principal's office.
For the historically challenged among us (i.e. me) why?
Way back when I was in high school in American History one of the essay questions was indeed, "What was Lincoln's Gettysburg address?" Of course what they wanted was a paragraph or two on the address as in speech and its importance. For some reason known only to the teen age me I was strong with the smart ass and I wrote," 1616 Canal ST." The next day I got the test back with a B-, the lowest grade I'd ever received in History to that point and a note in dreaded red ink to report to the principal. In view of the fact that I was in AP History he let me off with a warning and an extra assignment on the Gettysburg address in the form of a two page essay. In the punitive essay I not only addressed the address, ahem, but also included the fact that while in Gettysburg President Lincoln stayed at the Willis House on the corner of York and Baltimore Streets. That earned me an A and a good-natured head shake from the principal. :D

OK, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Oh yeah, Happy Thanksgiving to all the FC family! Now, I will be at my Mom's all day and her internet connection is best described as "Steam powered" so I will post "Today in History" tonight. Don't read it tonight if you want to be surprised tomorrow the 22ND. Thank you kindly. :D

Have you heard of the story regarding the 'dark stranger' on Blackbeard's boat the night before he was killed? It falls closer to mythology nowadays but I'd always wondered given things I've seen if there was any credence to it. Virginia had slaves and there were plenty of rumors regarding escaped slaves so it is quite possible that one of them from some sort of hidden settlement boarded, which led to the stories.

Being the way I am, I've been considering writing a story about Blackbeard going to hell and finagling a deal to come back in today's world based entirely on this little story. Maybe in my copious (HA!) free time.

No, I haven't heard of the "Dark stranger" before but hearing of it now has piqued my interest quite a bit. It could have been an escaped slave. On the other hand CPT Teach was an equal opportunity employer on his ships and was known to have take at least one slave ship and recruited some of the slaves as crew. I am now going to have to research this since it is the kind of history that fascinates me. Thank you!

That sounds like a great idea for a novel. Just keep your character away from Capitol Hill, even Blackbeard would be considered a babe in the woods by some of the politicians there. :)

Very true, but imagine what he'd do with today's weaponry. He'd go from pirate to terrorist in short order. :P
