1688 - Prince William III of Orange accepts invitation of take up the British crown. Yeah, I'm sure that was a hard sell.

1814 - Opening of the Congress of Vienna, which redrew Europe's political map after the defeat of Napoléon Bonaparte.

1867 - Karl Marx' "Das Kapital" published. Ironically many people who teach Marx never point out that he would have starved to death many times over if he hadn't been supported by his friend Friedrich Engles who was in turn supported by overly generous allowances from his father, a capitalist who owned a large textile factory in Salford, England. There is a lesson in that.

1880 - Thomas Edison began the commercial production of electric lamps at Edison Lamp Works in Menlo Park.

1908 - Henry Ford introduces the Model T car (costs $825).

1918 - Damascus was captured from the Turks during World War I by a force made up of British and Arab forces.

1925 - Scottish inventor John Logie Baird completed the first transmission of moving images. This is the first use of mechanical television or the mechanical scanning and transmission of images.

1944 - The Nazis crushed the Warsaw Uprising. It should be noted that Red Army forces were within striking distance of Warsaw and could have moved in support of the uprising but were held back by Stalin until the Polish nationalist forces were crushed by the NAZIs. Historians theorize that Stalin wanted no competition for control of post war Poland.

In this one sided war the World saw aircraft, armored vehicles, artillery, and poison gas used against people armed many times only with spears and swords.

1944 - During World War II, U.S. troops broke through the Siegfried Line.

1952 - Britain became the third nuclear power in the world when they successfully detonated their first atomic bomb. The U.S. and Russia were the only other nuclear powers.

That would make Korea the oldest continuous sovereign nation in the world, wouldn't it?

And we think English is a difficult language!

Unfortunately the date is really up for debate as is the origin of Dangun Wanggeom. As it presumably existed the state of Gojoseon comprised part of what is now North Korea and a bit or two of what is now Manchuria. The earliest written accounts of Gojoseon date from the 7TH Century AD leaving no reference to contemporary primary documents. This leaves Gojoseon in the realm of what is called "Traditional history" as opposed to "This is going to be on the test Friday history". So for now the title of oldest continuous sovereign state stays safely in the hands of tiny (24 Square miles) San Marino, established 301 AD.

If you think the name poor old, all over the place, Dafydd was saddled with is difficult you should see some of the road signs in Wales

If I recall, today (October 3) also marks the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu.

Right you are, Dillo! Excellent call.

After reading Dillo's post I wanted to write something about the action in Mogadishu and the entire Somali mission at the the time. I found that I couldn't without bringing a political component into it which does not really belong in this section. In fact some of my feelings about certain politicians deploying the US military without fully supporting the missions are so strong they may not belong on the revitalized Fedora chronicles at all.

1915 - The Dinosaur National Monument was established. The area covered part of Utah and Colorado.

1927 - The first actual work of carving began on Mount Rushmore.

1940 - Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini met in the Alps at Brenner Pass. At this meeting which took place in a railway car, Hitler gave a low key monologue on the similar interests of NAZIs and Fascists and Mussolini gave vague indications of support.

1957 - The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I into orbit around the Earth. Sputnik was the first man made satellite to enter space. Sputnik I fell out of orbit on January 4, 1958.
