Why Pyramids?

This isn't specifically about lost civilizations but then maybe it is. From the Ziggurat of UR to the temples of Chichen Itza, pyramidal structures can be found on almost every continent with continual habitation. They are admittedly not identical to one another and different building materials are used including earth but they all do have a very similar shape. The question is why? Is this something that is instinctive in people? If you give a small child blocks eventually he or she will come up with a stack of those blocks that can more or less pass for a pyramid. Is it a construction convention where it is simply easier to narrow buildings at the top to make use of inclined planes and conserve building material? Is it a religious convention? Is it a clue that there may have once been a lost super civilization?

Perhaps we will never know the answer but it is food for thought and conjecture.

Very interesting observation. While I have recognized this fact, I never gave it any thought. Perhaps it is just a simple structure that is not only easy to build, in terms of strength it is unmatched. As you mentioned, give a child some blocks and after a while they will figure out a means of stacking that prevents toppling.

I think that if we use Occam's razor the simplest answer is that after trail and error it probably develops as the best way to reach elevation with stability.

Most likely it has nothing to do with anything metaphysical and is simply, as Pilot said, the easiest way to achieve height via a construct. Reaching height appears to be a simple desire of humanity; it's why we climb mountains and trees. Also, undertaking a monumental achievement resulting in such a structure is something endemic to being human.

That being said, there are other factors involved in the locations of these pyramids that seems to contradict these simple and understandable reasons. For example, the Great Pyramid faces true north which is a direction that we were unable to determine for over a millennia until after they were created. The Great Pyramid is built on the geographical center of landmasses on Earth. Either one could be a coincidence, but both is unlikely. Still possible, but unlikely.

Also, we have no idea why they built them or what purpose they served. We have theories but none that have complete agreement on. We could talk about how 'mainstream' science ostracizes anyone who contradicts those who oppose the 'official' theories but that's not relevant to this discussion. The pyramids at Giza are proposed to be tombs but they bear zero resemblance to any of the structures we know to be tombs in the same time-frame; no mummies have ever been recovered, no walls filled with murals describing the dead person's life. There is no evidence supporting the theory.

The pyramids of the sun and moon in Mexico are the same; we believe them to be temples but only because we don't have any other ideas. Ironically, there is more evidence to support these having been tombs as there have been dead bodies found. However, there are no other trappings of tombs so these are believed to be sacrificial victims. Also, these pyramids are known to have been built in stages unlike the pyramids in Giza. We still do not know how they were built, but clearly those methods were not used once then forgotten.

There are those who espouse the thought that all of the great pyramids are located on two specific lines around the globe. I'm not sold on that theory because there are other pyramids located outside of those lines. It's fun to read about though.

Personally, I think pyramids are inspired by nature. Specifically mountains. When you think of mountains, the simplest rendition of mountains are basically pyramids. Children, when drawing mountains, draw triangles; pyramids in profile. That makes more sense to me. It also explains why there are four sides in a pyramid instead of three; it more closely resembles a mountain.

All of this doesn't speak to the spiritual side of them. I wouldn't be upholding my end of the Paranormal Connection podcast if I didn't dive into that a little but maybe I'll get into that later, but there's more I want to read before starting work.

Cousi, you touched on alignment of the pyramids which is as fascinating as the structures themselves. Coincidentally PBS aired a show that explored this very thing, with heavy emphasis on New World pyramids and pyramidal structures. I think it is worth a look if you are interested in the subject.
