1451 - Sultan Mehmed II, the Conqueror inherits the throne of the Ottoman Empire.

1488 - The Portuguese navigator Bartholomeu Diaz landed at Mossal Bay in the Cape, the first European known to have landed on the southern extremity of Africa.

1509 - The Battle of Diu, naval battle at port of Diu, India between Portugal and the Ottoman Empire, establishes Portuguese trading control.

1690 - The first paper money in America was issued by the Massachusetts colony. The currency was used to pay soldiers that were fighting in the war against Quebec. Technically these were bills of credit.

1783 - Spain recognized the independence of the United States.

1870 - US state of Iowa ratifies the 15th Amendment of the United States Constitution allowing suffrage for all races.

1900 - In Frankfort, KY, gubernatorial candidate William Goebels died from an assassin's bullet wounds. On August 18, 1900, Ex-Sec. of State Caleb Powers was found guilt of conspiracy to murder Gov. Goebels.

1913 - The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It authorized the power to impose and collect income tax. Boo-hiss.

1917 - The U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with Germany, which had announced a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare.

1928 - Paleoanthropologist Davidson Black reports his findings on the ancient human fossils found at Zhoukoudian, China in the journal Nature and declares them to be a new species he names 'Sinanthropus pekinensis' which is now known as 'Homo erectus". Giggling will not be tolerated!

1941 - In Vichy, France, the Nazis used force to restore Pierre Laval to office.

1945 - Russia agreed to enter World War II against Japan. This was a political move on the part of Stalin and not a genuine contribution to the war effort.

1966 - The first rocket-assisted controlled landing on the Moon was made by the Soviet space vehicle Luna IX.

1969 - At the Palestinian National Congress in Cairo, Yasser Arafat was appointed leader of the PLO.

211 - Roman Emperor Septimius Severus dies, leaving the Roman Empire in the hands of his two quarrelsome sons, Caracalla and Geta.

960 - Coronation of Zhao Kuangyin as Emperor Taizu of the Song, initiating three centuries of Song Dynasty dominance in southern China.

1789 - 1st US electoral college chooses George Washington as President and John Adams as Vice-President.

1847 - In Maryland, the first U.S. Telegraph Company was established.

1861 - Delegates from six southern states met in Montgomery, AL, to form the Confederate States of America.

1904 - The Russo-Japanese War began after Japan laid siege to Port Arthur.

1936 - Radium E. became the first radioactive substance to be produced synthetically.

1941 - The United Service Organizations (USO) was created.

1945 - During World War II, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Josef Stalin began a conference at Yalta to outline plans for Germany's defeat.

1948 - Ceylon gained independence within the British Commonwealth. The country later became known as Sri Lanka.

1957 - Smith-Corona Manufacturing Inc., of New York, began selling portable electric typewriters. The first machine weighed 19 pounds. Writers were stronger back then.

1964 - The Administrator of General Services announced that the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution had been ratified. The amendment banned the poll tax.

1974 - Patricia (Patty) Hearst was kidnapped in Berkeley, CA, by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

1985 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan's defense budget called for a tripling of the expenditure on the "Star Wars" research program.

1993 - Russian scientists unfurled a giant mirror in orbit and flashed a beam of sunlight across Europe during the night. Observers saw it only as a momentary flash.

1997 - A civil jury in California found O.J. Simpson liable in the death of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Goldman's parents were awarded $8.5 million in compensatory damages.

1997 - President Milosevic of Serbia apparently surrendered to the will of his people, ordering his government to recognize opposition victories in local elections held in November 1996.

1782 - The Spanish captured Minorca from the British. This was actually a recapture since the Brits took it from the Spanish in 1708.

1783 - Sweden recognized the independence of the United States. We're still trying to put together the IKEA cannon they sent us in honor of the occasion. OK, the last part is somewhat apocryphal and may be the creation of an amateur historian's imagination. :)

1994 - White separatist Byron De La Beckwith was convicted in Jackson, MS, of the 1963 murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

I've never owned anything from IKEA but from various comments I've heard prior to this, I'm not sure I want to. But if they sell cannons I may have to re-evaluate. :lol:

Ha! Well be forewarned that IKEA is an ancient Viking word that means,"Made in China and shipped with assembly instructions consisting of confusing diagrams and no words." :)

LOL! Of course it came with an ottoman, it was the ottoman Empire after all. In this case though I think Mehmed's footstool was a real live Ottoman forced to kneel. Cruel but fair was Mehmed II. :D

1508 - Maximilian I proclaimed Holy Roman Emperor, 1st Emperor in centuries not to be crowned by the Pope.

1778 - The United States gained official recognition from France as the two nations signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance in Paris.

1788 - Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

1815 - The state of New Jersey issued the first American railroad charter to John Stevens.

1819 - Stamford Raffles founds Singapore as a British trading port. Today Raffles is mostly remembered for the really great bar in Singapore bearing his name.

1840 - The Treaty of Waitangi is signed between 40 Maori Chiefs (later signed by 500) and representatives of the British crown in Waitangi, New Zealand. The treaty was designed to share sovereignty between the two groups.

1672 - Isaac Newton reads 1st optics paper before Royal Society in London.

1693 - A charter was granted for the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.

1807 - Battle of Eylau ends inconclusively between Napoleon's forces and Russian Empire. This is the first battle Napoleon lost in his struggle for unlimited conquest.

1861 - The Confederate States of America was formed.

1861 - A Cheyenne delegation and some Arapaho leaders accepted a new settlement (Treaty of Fort Wise) with the U.S. Federal government. The deal ceded most of their land but secured a 600-square mile reservation and annuity payments.

1900 - In South Africa, British troops under Gen. Buller were beaten at Ladysmith. The British fled over the Tugela River.
