1097 - Crusaders arrive in Antioch during the First Crusade.

1603 - Chinese uprising in Philippines fails after 23,000 killed.

1740 - Maria Theresa became the ruler of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia with the death of her father, Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI.

1774 - The new Continental Congress, the governing body of America’s colonies, passed an order proclaiming that all citizens of the colonies "discountenance and discourage all horse racing and all kinds of gaming, cock fighting, exhibitions of shows, plays and other expensive diversions and entertainment." Intrusive!

1803 - The U.S. Senate approved the Louisiana Purchase.

1818 - The U.S. and Great Britain established the boundary between the U.S. and Canada to be the 49th parallel.

1892 - The city of Chicago dedicated the World's Colombian Exposition.

1903 - A joint commission ruled in favor of the U.S. concerning a dispute over the boundary between Canada and the District of Alaska.

1935 Communist forces end their Long March at Yan'an, in Shaanxi, China, bringing Mao Zedong to prominence

1942 - Pierre Laval told the French labor that they must serve in Germany. Laval was Chief of Government for Vichy France. After the liberation of France he was arrested by Free French Forces and did not fare well in prison.

1944 - Allied forces invaded the Philippines.

1944 - During World War II, the Yugoslav cities of Belgrade and Dubrovnik were liberated. In this case "Liberated" means that Soviet Forces took these cities.

1797 - "Old Ironsides," the U.S. Navy frigate Constitution, was launched in Boston's harbor.

1805 - Battle of Trafalgar occurs off Cape Trafalga, Spain. British Admiral Horatio Nelson defeats combined French and Spanish fleet. Nelson was shot and killed during battle. Since it is October and Halloween month I will point out that Admiral Nelson's body was sealed in a cask of brandy for preservation and sent back to England. Creepy fact.

1854 - Florence Nightingale with a staff of 38 nurses is sent to the Crimean War.

1879 - Thomas Edison invented the electric incandescent lamp. It would last 13 1/2 hours before it would burn out. There is some evidence that Edison mainly took credit for inventing the light bulb.

1925 - The photoelectric cell was first demonstrated at the Electric Show in New York City, NY.

1925 - The U.S. Treasury Department announced that it had fined 29,620 people for prohibition (of alcohol) violations.

1944 - During World War II, the German city of Aachen was captured by U.S. troops.

1945 - Women in France were allowed to vote for the first time.

1950 - Chinese forces invaded Tibet.

1983 - The Pentagon reported that US Troops were headed to Grenada to protect and evacuate Americans living there.

1986 - The U.S. ordered 55 Soviet diplomats to leave. The action was in reaction to the Soviet Union expelling five American diplomats.

1633 - Battle of Liaoluo Bay: Dutch East India Company defeated by Chinese Ming naval forces in southern Fujian sea.

1721 - Tsar Peter the Great becomes "All-Russian Imperator". Roughly meaning Emperor of all Russia.

1746 - The College of New Jersey was officially chartered. It later became known as Princeton University.

1797 - Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first recorded parachute jump. He made the jump from about 3,000 feet.

1836 - Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first constitutionally elected president of the Republic of Texas.

1844 - This day is recognized as "The Great Disappointment" among those who practiced Millerism. The world was expected to come to an end according to the followers of William Miller. The modern Seventh Day Adventist faith is derived from MIllerism post "Great Disappointment" movements.

1879 - Thomas Edison continued his successful experiments with a high-resistance carbon filament.

1907 - The Panic of 1907 began when depositors began withdrawing money from many New York banks.

1954 - The Federal Republic of Germany was invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

1962 - Cuban missile crisis: US President John F. Kennedy addresses TV about Russian missile bases in Cuba and imposes a naval blockade on Cuba.

1968 - Apollo 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft had orbited the Earth 163 times.

42 BC - Roman Republican civil wars: Second Battle of Philippi - Brutus's army is decisively defeated by Mark Antony and Octavian. Brutus commits suicide.

1864 - During the U.S. Civil War, Union forces led by Gen. Samuel R. Curtis defeated the Confederate forces in Missouri that were under Gen. Stirling Price.

1910 - Blanche S. Scott became the first woman to make a public solo airplane flight in the United States.

1915 - Approximately 25,000 women demanded the right to vote with a march in New York City, NY.

1942 - During World War II, the British began a major offensive against Axis forces at El Alamein, Egypt.

1944 - During World War II, the Battle of Leyte Gulf began.

1946 - The United Nations General Assembly convened in New York for the first time.

1956 - Hungarian citizens began an uprising against Soviet occupation. On November 4, 1956 Soviet forces enter Hungary and eventually suppress the uprising.

1958 - Russian poet and novelist Boris Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He was forced to refuse the honor due to negative Soviet reaction. Pasternak won the award for writing "Dr. Zhivago".

1962 - During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. naval "quarantine" of Cuba was approved by the Council of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The same day the U.S. Navy reconnaissance squadron VFP-62 began overflights of Cuba under the code name "Blue Moon."

1971 - The U.N. General Assembly voted to expel Taiwan and seat Communist China.

1973 - U.S. President Richard M. Nixon agreed to turn over the subpoenaed tapes concerning the Watergate affair.

1260 - Qutuz, Mamluk Sultans of Egypt (1259-60), is assassinated by Baibars, a fellow Mamluk leader, who seizes power for himself. The Mamluks or Mamelukes were originally slave soldiers who over time seized power from their masters. So seizing power was kind of a tradition with them.

1648 - Treaty of Westphalia ends The Thirty Year's War in the Holy Roman Empire; Switzerland's independence recognized. This was the effective end of the power base of the Holy Roman Empire.

1795 - The country of Poland was divided up between Austria, Prussia, and Russia.

1836 - Alonzo D. Phillips received a patent for the phosphorous friction safety match.

1861 - The first transcontinental telegraph message was sent when Justice Stephen J. Field of California transmitted a telegram to U.S. President Lincoln.

1929 - "Black Thursday", start of stock market crash, Dow Jones down 12.8%. Five days later on 29 OCT the more infamous "Black Tuesday" would see even further drops.

1931 - The upper level of the George Washington Bridge opened for traffic between New York and New Jersey.

1939 - Nylon stockings were sold to the public for the first time in Wilmington, DE.

1945 - The United Nations (UN) was formally established less than a month after the end of World War II. The Charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.

1948 - The term "cold war" was used for the first time. It was in a speech by Bernard Baruch before the Senate War Investigating Committee.

1962 - During the Cuban Missile Crisis, U.S. military forces went on the highest alert in the postwar era in preparation for a possible full-scale war with the Soviet Union.

1415 Battle of Agincourt: Henry V's forces defeat larger French army and the longbow defeats the armored knight. The battle produced around 6,000 casualties among French forces while the English suffered far less than 1,000.

1812 - During the War of 1812, the U.S. frigate United States captured the British vessel Macedonian.

1854 - The Charge of the Light Brigade took place during the Crimean War. The British were winning the Battle of Balaclava when Lord James Cardigan received an order to attack the Russians. He took his troops into a valley and suffered 40 percent casualties. Later it was revealed that the order was the result of confusion and was not given intentionally.

1870 - The first U.S. trademark was given. The recipient was the Averill Chemical Paint Company of New York City.

1917 - The Bolsheviks (Communists) under Vladimir Ilyich Lenin seized power in Russia. Note: This is the date under the Julian calendar.

1951 - In Panmunjom, peace talks concerning the Korean War resumed after 63 days.

1962 - U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson presented photographic evidence to the United Nations Security Council. The photos were of Soviet missile bases in Cuba. Ambassador Stevenson demands USSR UN rep Zorin answer regarding the Cuban missile bases saying "I am prepared to wait for my answer until hell freezes over"

1983 - U.S. troops and soldiers from six Caribbean nations invaded Grenada to restore order and provide protection to U.S. citizens after a recent coup within Grenada's Communist (pro-Cuban) government.

1774 - The First Continental Congress of the U.S. adjourned in Philadelphia.

1825 - The Erie Canal opened in upstate New York. The 363-mile canal connected Lake Erie and the Hudson River at a cost of $7,602,000.

1861 - Pony Express (Missouri to California) ends after 19 months.

1863 - International conference begins in Geneva aimed at improving medical conditions on battlefields - beginning of the Red Cross.

1881 - The "Gunfight at the OK Corral" took place in Tombstone, AZ. The fight was between Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and Doc Holiday and the Ike Clanton Gang.

1905 - Norway gained independence from Sweden.

1942 - The U.S. ship Hornet was sunk in the Battle of Santa Cruz during World War II. This is the ship CV-8 that carried the Doolittle Raiders to within punching distance of Imperial Japan.

1944 - During World War II, the Battle of Leyte Gulf ended. The battle was won by American forces and brought the end of the Pacific phase of World War II into sight.

1957 - The Soviet Union announced that defense minister Marchal Georgi Zhukov had been relieved of his duties.

1975 - Anwar Sadat became the first Egyptian president to officially visit to the United States.

1979 - South Korean President Park Chung-hee was shot to death by Kim Jae-kyu, the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.

312 - Roman Emperor Constantine the Great is said to have received his famous Vision of the Cross.

1659 - William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson became the first Quakers to be executed in America. The Royal Governor of the Massachusetts colony where these executions took place, viewed Quakers as a particular threat to the stability of civil governance.

1787 - The first of the Federalist Papers were published in the New York Independent. The series of 85 essays, written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, were published under the pen name "Publius."

1795 - The United States and Spain signed the Treaty of San Lorenzo. The treaty is also known as "Pinckney's Treaty."

1858 - Roland Macy opened Macy's Department Store in New York City. It was Macy's eighth business adventure, the other seven failed.

1904 - The New York subway system officially opened. It was the first rapid-transit subway system in America.

1962 - The Soviet Union adds to the Cuban Missile Crisis by calling for the dismantling of U.S. missile basis in Turkey. Ultimately, U.S. President Kennedy agreed to the new aspect of the agreement.

1636 - Harvard College was founded in Massachusetts. The original name was Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was the first school of higher education in America.

1746 - Peruvian cities of Lima and Callao demolished by earthquake. 18,000 lives are lost.

1776 - The Battle of White Plains took place during the American Revolutionary War. The battle was a British victory.

1793 - Eli Whitney applied for a patent for his cotton gin.

1886 - The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor by U.S. President Cleveland. The statue weighs 225 tons and is 152 feet tall. It was originally known as "Liberty Enlightening the World." I always did like tall women.

1904 - The St. Louis Police Department became the first in the US to use fingerprinting. The first recorded use of forensic fingerprinting was in Argentina in 1892 based on applications of Galton's pattern types by senior police official Juan Vucetich.

1919 - The U.S. Congress enacted the Volstead Act, also known as the National Prohibition Act. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 with the passing of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Not intrusive and ill considered at all. :roll:

1922 - Benito Mussolini took control of the Italian government and introduced fascism to Italy. Totally intrusive and ill considered.

1936 - The Statue of Liberty was rededicated by U.S. President Roosevelt on its 50th anniversary.

1962 - Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev informed the U.S. that he had ordered the dismantling of Soviet missile bases in Cuba.

1985 - John A. Walker Jr. and his son, Michael Lance Walker, admitted guilt to charges of spying for the Soviet Union.

1986 - The centennial of the Statue of Liberty was celebrated in New York.

539 BC - King Cyrus "the Great" of Persia marches into Babylon, freeing Jewish captives and allowing them to return home. King Cyrus is also known for his Cyrus Declaration Cylinder which is recognized as the first codified list of human rights.

1268 - Conradin, the last legitimate male heir of the German Hohenstaufen dynasty of Kings and Holy Roman Emperors, is executed with Frederick I, Margrave of Baden by Charles I of Sicily.

1618 - Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded under a sentence that had been brought against him 15 years earlier for conspiracy against King James I.

1652 - The Massachusetts Bay Colony proclaimed itself to be an independent commonwealth.

1665 - Battle of Mbwila [Ambuila],: Portuguese forces defeat forces of the Kingdom of Kongo and decapitate King Antonio I of Kongo / Nvita a Nkanga.

1682 - William Penn landed at what is now Chester, PA. He was the founder of Pennsylvania.

1863 - The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded.

1901 - Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of U.S. President McKinley, was electrocuted.

1923 - Turkey formally became a republic after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The first president was Mustafa Kemal, later known as Kemal Ataturk.

1929 - "Black Tuesday" Wall Street Stock Market crashes triggering the "Great Depression".

1940 - The first peacetime military draft began in the U.S.

1956 - Israel invaded Egypt's Sinai Peninsula during the Suez Canal Crisis.

1969 - The U.S. Supreme Court ordered an immediate end to all school segregation.

1991 - The U.S. Galileo spacecraft became the first to visit an asteroid (Gaspra).

1998 - The space shuttle Discovery blasted off with John Glenn on board. Glenn was 77 years old. In 1962 he became the first American to orbit the Earth.
